Ep. 4.3 "Breaker of Chains"

We start where we left off looking at Joffrey’s dead face and listening Cersei accuse Tyrion of murder.  Sansa leaves with Ser Dontos and Cersei notices her absence.  Lord Tywin orders all of the gates and exits be shut and locked, but Ser Dontos gets her out just in time and takes her in a small boat.  She asks where they are going and he tells her somewhere safe.  He rows until they are under a dense fog and they reach a hidden ship.  He tells her to climb up the stairs on the side of the boat.  Once she’s at the top someone grabs her.  It’s Petyr Baelish.  He has Ser Dontos killed.  Sansa objects, but Petyr knows the gold cloaks will be looking for her because they think she murdered the king.  Since Joffrey killed her father and tortured her she would be the most likely suspect.  Petyr tells Sansa she’s safe with him and they are sailing home.

Margaery thinks she must be cursed since her first husband liked men and was killed and her second husband was a sociopath who was poisoned.  Her grandmother tells her she is better off.  The Lannisters still need an alliance with Highgarden and there will be another king.

Tywin, Cersei and Tommen look on Joffrey lying in state.  Tywin talks to Tommen about being a good king.  They discuss the many traits of kings and decide that wisdom is what makes a good king.  Tywin says Joffrey didn’t have wisdom and he wasn’t a good king, if he had been maybe he’d still be alive.  Tommen and Tywin leave as Tywin starts to talk to him about how to make heirs for the family.  Jaime comes in and asks for a moment alone with Cersei.  Cersei tells Jaime that Tyrion killed Joffrey.  But Jaime doesn’t believe it.  Cersei tells Jaime to avenge their son and kill Tyrion.  Jaime thinks the trial will bring out the truth.  She lets Jaime comfort her for a moment.  They start to kiss, but then she pulls away.  He tells her she is a hateful woman and then he rapes her in the sept.

The Hound and Arya run across some natives.  Thanks to Arya’s skills as a liar she gets the man and daughter to invite them to sleep in their barn for the night while it storms.  The man talks about the Red Wedding and how things are horrible under the Frey’s.  He asks if the Hound and Arya could stay for a while.  He needs help tending his crops and the Hound could scare off outlaws.  He will pay them with some hidden money he has.  Arya awakes the next morning to a scream.  The Hound has stolen the man’s money and wants them to be on their way.  Arya screams at him for being a thief when the man helped them out.  She calls him the “worst shit in the seven kingdoms”.

Sam tells Gilly he is nervous about her being there with all of the men of the Night’s Watch.  She says no one has touched her yet.  He thinks she’ll be safer if she leaves the Wall.  She thinks he’s bored with her, but he says he just wants to protect her.  He takes her to Mole Town and says he will visit her often, but she is hurt that he is leaving her there.

Stannis is happy that Joffrey is dead, but is mad that Ser Davos let Gendry go.  He needs an army.  Davos thinks he should hire the Golden Company, but Stannis scoffs at hiring sellswords to win his throne.  Davos goes to a reading lesson with Shireen.  While they are talking he comes up with the idea of writing the Iron Bank of Bravos.

Lord Tywin breaks in on Prince Oberyn and Elaria’s extracurricular activities in the brothel.  He wants to speak with Prince Oberyn alone.  Prince Oberyn says he’s sorry about Joffrey’s death, that poison is a horrible way to die.  Tywin asks how he knows Joffrey was poisoned.  Prince Oberyn studied poisons at the Citadel and Lord Tywin finds that awfully coincidental.  He wants to know what Prince Oberyn and Tyrion talked about a few days before.  Prince Oberyn says they talked about Elia’s rape and murder and how Oberyn blames Lord Tywin.  Lord Tywin says the Mountain did not act on his orders.  Prince Oberyn tells Lord Tywin he wants to meet with the Mountain.  Lord Tywin says that can be arranged if Prince Oberyn will be the third judge in Tyrion’s trial.  Lord Tywin and Mace Tyrell will be the other judges.  He would also like Prince Oberyn to sit on the small council of the king.

Pod comes to visit Tyrion.  He tells Tyrion that he doesn’t believe that he killed Joffrey.  His will have a trial in a fortnight and they have many witnesses against him.  Pod tells him that Sansa has disappeared.  Tyrion needs witnesses, but non seem to be available.  He asks Pod to get Jaime to see him.  Pod tells Tyrion that someone approached him to be a witness against him and say he saw him buy poison.  If he did this he would be named Ser Podrik Pane.  Tyrion asks if he is taking them up on their offer, but Pod says he won’t.  Tyrion tells him to be smart and take the offer or get out of Kings Landing before his trial.  He doesn’t want Pod to be killed.

The Wildlings attack a village.  They leave one child alive to go to the Wall and tell the Nights Watch.  The men of the Nights Watch debate what to do.  They decide they must defend the Wall no matter what.  They hear a horn and some rangers return with bad news.  Some of their group were caught and are on their way to Mance Rayder.  Jon tells Ser Alliser Thorne that he lied to Mance Rayder and told him they had 1000 soldiers at the Wall.  If he gets to question the captured rangers then he will know he can defeat them.

Daenarys reaches Mereen.  They send out a single man on horseback.  The Mereenese want her to pick a champion to fight against him.  Daario Naharis volunteers.  The Mereneese soldier races at him on horseback.  Daario waits until he gets close and throws a knife into the horse’s head.  The rider comes flying off and when he lands at Daario’s feet, he slits his throat.  Daenarys speaks to the slaves of Mereen and tells them of how she freed the slaves of Astapor and Yunkai, and how she will free them from their masters.  Then she brings out her catapults and has them released.  When the weapons fall we see that it is the collars of the former slaves who now fight for her.

End credits…

So, will Tommen make a good king?  He’s not sociopathic like Joffrey.  If they can keep Cersei away from him maybe he will be okay.  I’m not happy with the whole Jaime raping Cersei thing.  It goes completely against his growth and change as a character and I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen in the book.  Cersei does scorn him and he finally starts to see the manipulative evil slut she is.
